Søren Dalgaard is working at Aalborg Kongres & Kulturcenter in Denmark. AKKC is a multi-venue center and host for a large variety of world-class events annually. Theatrical acts like Les Misérables, Grease, Sleeping Beauty and renowned ballets like Romeo and Juliet can regularly be enjoyed throughout the year. Also, classic shows, whereas Cinderella on ice is a fan favorite, numerous musical acts and concerts are filling the schedule to its limit.
AAKC was built in 1953 and has since then continuously stayed up to date with technical progress, making it a state of the art center for entertainment. The main stage can be found in Aalborghallen which measure impressive dimensions, the venue is 70m. long, 32m. wide and the height of the scene is 24m. This is where a large amount of the 100 – 150 shows AKKC hosts yearly, takes place. Søren has through his everyday work figured out a few key guidelines that help him create brilliant atmospheric effects, some of which he shares with us.
Søren was first introduced to Swefog and the hazer Ultimate 3000 by Light Partner during Pro Light and Sound in Frankfurt several years ago. He has since then been using Swefog at AKKC.
”Positioning is key, making sure that the machine is placed where the venue’s airflow helps distributing the haze is important. The separate compressor unit of the Swefog Ultimate 3000 allow me to place the haze-unit at the perfect position without any risk of noise on the stage. This is very much appreciated at classical music concerts for example says Søren.
I think that as a lighting designer one must not be afraid to turn the machine on early. Letting the haze distribute evenly in the venue some time before the show always yields the best results for calm haze. Thanks to the long hanging time, I sometimes put the machine on really early before a show. This allow me to use only one Ultimate 3000 machine even in the largest venues. Moreover, since the machine is very economical, the fluid consumption is barely noticeable. For approximately 150 shows last year, we needed no more than 20L of fluid, he continues explaining.”
Light designers and artists often notice how great AKKC’s atmospheric effects are and the difference between the C-fluid and Crystal fluid is very noticeable according to Søren. Swefog’s Crystal fluid, also called a TrueColour fluid, has in fact been developed to keep haze up to date with today’s progress in lighting and laser technology as well as performers’ demands for unnoticeable atmospheric effects. Colours are key for great lighting design both live and recorded. Light reflected in TrueColour haze maintain high CRI values and deliver all shades of subtle pastels to vibrant saturated colors. Thus, safeguarding the visual representation of set pieces, costumes and ambience tones. Mid-air projections, gobo effects and record-breaking laser shows further increasing the demand for a completely even and calm haze.
”Our new approach of keeping Swefog’s R&D department very close to the lighting industry and designers is helping us create technology that interact and beautifully complement our peers’ technological advancements, says Christopher Santi Götz from Swefog’s market communications department happily.”
Søren continues by mentioning how the haze is surprisingly clean and leaves all other equipment and technology cleaner than usual. The world famous Russian State Opera and Ballet from Tatarstan was visiting AKKC last year. They brought large, 18 m tall and 20 m wide, hand painted backdrops with them. It was of utmost importance that those were not damaged and Swefog’s haze proved to be working perfectly around these delicate objects.
”Another moment when I was nervous, yet a bit different from the Sleeping Beauty ballet with the hand painted backdrops, was when we started doing shows on ice. I was afraid that the haze would condense onto the ice. It however turned out that shows on ice are also working magnificently with the Swefog Ultimate 3000-unit, Søren says with a smile.”
Some of the features Søren likes the best about the Swefog Ultimate 3000 is the “instant on” technology, and that it requires nothing but electric power and haze fluid. After his 20 years in the lighting industry, Søren can safely say that it is the hazer he believes works the very best for AKKC.
