SSG PRO is a busy technical production and rental company touring Europe and Russia most days of the year. With Viktoras Martusevicius leading his experienced teams of lighting designers, riggers and sound crew, SSG PRO have produced magical shows for touring artists, sport championships, and theatrical performances and everything in-between.
Viktoras’s meticulous planning allow SSG PRO to simultaneously work on numerous large shows, which more often than not, are surprisingly unique and original concepts put together. Due to the occasionally never-before-seen effects created we were naturally curious to learn how these events are engineered.
We regularly start at the drawing board where we prepare simple drawings and discuss possibilities. The show is then prepared in Wysiwyg where our vision is realized to some extent. At the same time, we plan what resources, sub rentals and investments will be necessary, Viktoras explains. Inspiration for new light- and stage designs comes mostly from our travels around the world. Visiting large events is a great way to learn from other producers and trade fairs are important to learn about the newest products. One must not forget though, that very old technology and solutions mixed with the new innovations sometimes generate the very best and unordinary effects. That is why I make sure to mix a lot of equipment and technologies, if it’s possible. In the end however, our favorite equipment – is reliable equipment. Because if it’s not working before the show starts, it won’t matter what model or brand we use, he continues explaining with a smile.
Luckily, the Eastern European showbusiness industry, where SSG PRO is primarily present at, has seen large growth in recent years. New technologies, better equipment from manufacturers all across Europe and more knowledge has all helped the industry mature. Among a few, two examples from pre-production are 3D visualization programs and advanced control tables which have been game changers. As a result, our shows have grown grander, with more effects, complex light plots and moving stage systems. In the case of the newest lighting fixtures, LED fixtures with single pixel control, or for a function like Pixel Mapping large amounts of data is necessary. Yet, today I simply have everything I need for our shows at the touch of my fingertips, he says pleased.
After having spent much time planning, programming and investing in great effects it is important that the show is experienced as intended by the audiences. To create the desired effect of calm haze we use Swefog’s Ultimate 2000 and 3000 hazers with True Color fluids. The main reason is how good for example bright parallel beams, moving gobo projections, wash lights, pixel lights, screens and so on, all look on stage with an invisible and well-balanced haze. There is no doubt however, that persistency and durability are important properties I look for when choosing gear to SSG PRO’s rental division as well.
Dimensions of cases is another thing that must be a priority for each rental company, otherwise too much resources and work will be spent on empty space. SSG PRO, may be based in Lithuania but regularly travels to all corners of Europe where Cyprus, Baku and Montenegro are examples of destinations that are particular popular among the SSG PRO technicians due to the warm and enjoyable climate, Viktoras continues explaining jokingly. Nonetheless, it certainly is important to have equipment that works well logistically to successfully produce touring magic.
